SABRINA CARERI

URBAN PLANNER + LANDSCAPE DESIGNER

ABOUT

Hi, I'm Sabrina!

A landscape designer and urban planner. Professionally, my work spans landscape architecture, urban design, policy development, environmental and cultural studies, and written and graphic communications. I hold a Master of Landscape Architecture from the University of British Columbia and a Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning, awarded with distinction, from Toronto Metropolitan University.

I bring over three years of professional experience in project management and more than six years in urban planning, design research, and communications. Currently, I serve as Lab Manager at Toronto Metropolitan University’s (TMU’s) Ecological Design Lab -- a design research studio, where I lead projects focused on design advocacy, sustainable urban development, and urban climate resilience and biodiversity recovery. Prior to that, I worked as a research assistant with TMU’s DiverCity Lab, supporting projects that examined planning policies and practices focused on equity and inclusion to inform design strategies for culturally rich and diverse communities.

Alongside my academic and research work, I run my own independent design communications practice, providing landscape visualization, graphic design support, and communications consulting. I'm excited to have paved this unique path for myself in landscape architecture, operating within the niche area of design communications.

At the core of my work is a passion for ecological restoration, culture and placemaking, and the power of design to foster meaningful relationships between people and nature in urban spaces. Beyond my professional practice, my love for cities, nature, and culture fuels my love of travel, documenting the stories, spaces, and creative inspirations I encounter in urban environments around the world.

Graphically, I often explore a blend of analog and digital techniques and have a love for writing, as well as strong organizational and leadership skills, and an appreciation for collaboration. My connection to design began when I was young, influenced by my dad who is an interior designer, and whose work instilled in me both an appreciation for creative practice and a strong work ethic. Growing up surrounded by design shaped my interests across disciplines that extends beyond public realm and graphic design to include film, fashion, and even make up, and continues to inform my approach to creativity, aesthetics, and storytelling.
